Students learn the role of a Range Safety Officer and the purpose of Range Standard Operating Procedures. They learn how to inspect ranges for safety, the four types of shooting range rules and how each applies to the handling and use of guns. They learn the NRA Rules of Gun Safety, the rules of using and storing a gun, and how to conduct a Range Safety Briefing. Emergency range procedures are included material, as well as students are taught how to clear stoppages and malfunctions for most guns commonly brought to a public shooting range. With attending the entire class and scoring 90 or better on the written examination students are certified as NRA Range Safety Officers. This certification meets the requirements of the Boy Scouts of American to work with Boy Scouts shooting activities.
